The Challenge Just Left MTV After 28 Years. Everything You Need to Know About Cutthroat.

Paramount+. Thailand. Three teams. CT, Bananas and Cara Maria. August 5th. After nearly three decades on MTV, The Challenge just made the biggest move in franchise history — and Ava Witt has every detail.

Johnny Bananas called it months ago. Standing on a TikTok podcast with Leroy Garrett, he said MTV's future was grim and the show would move to Paramount+. He also said Season 42 would be make-or-break for the franchise. Today, Paramount+ confirmed every single word of it — and then some.

The Challenge: Cutthroat premieres August 5, 2026, exclusively on Paramount+. After 28 years on MTV — 28 years — the flagship show is leaving its home network for streaming. It is the first time in franchise history the main series has made this jump. The spinoffs had already tested the waters; All Stars lived on Paramount+, USA aired on CBS. But the original? Always MTV. Until now.

Bananas put it best when describing what's at stake: "We are going to have to go show up and show out to prove to our new parents, Skydance, that we are worth keeping around." No pressure, then.

🔪 What Is Cutthroat?

Cutthroat is not a new concept — it is a revival. The original Cutthroat was Season 20, back in 2010. Three teams. Brutal eliminations. And the birthplace of one of the most infamous moments in Challenge history: the Johnny Bananas backpack, where CT literally picked Bananas up during an elimination and carried him on his back like a piece of luggage. Both men are back for Season 42. The symmetry is not accidental.

The format for the 2026 version raises the stakes considerably. Twenty-four competitors are divided into three teams, competing for a share of a $500,000 grand prize. Here is the twist that makes this season different from almost everything that came before it: the only way to take home a share of the prize is to cross the finish line together as a unit. Individual glory means nothing. You win as a team or you go home empty-handed.

Nominated captains must balance their hunger for power with the need for loyalty. Solo players must prove they can be team players. In a show that has rewarded individual backstabbing for over two decades, asking people to actually cooperate is, frankly, diabolical. Well played, production.

"This is going to be one of the most important seasons as far as just viability is concerned. We are going to have to show out to prove to our new parents, Skydance, that we are worth keeping around." — Johnny Bananas, predicting his own season months before it was announced

👥 The Cast — Who's In, Who's Back

The cast is a mix of franchise legends and newcomers from Survivor, Big Brother, Love Island USA, Too Hot to Handle, Cheer, MAFS UK, Deal or No Deal Island and The Amazing Race. Here is who matters most:

CT Tamburello
Challenge OG · 5-time champion

After a humbling performance on Vets & New Threats where rookies body-shamed him and eliminated him early, CT is back on a revenge tour. Five championships to his name. Coming to remind everyone exactly why he held this show hostage for two decades.

Johnny "Bananas" Devenanzio
Challenge OG · 7-time champion

Seven championships, $1.27 million in prize money, and zero wins since Total Madness. After an early exit on Season 41, Bananas is chasing an eighth title that would cement his status as the greatest of all time. No pressure on the man who publicly predicted this entire network move months ago.

Cara Maria Sorbello
Challenge veteran · 2-time champion

The most emotional return on this cast. Cara left Season 41 mid-filming when her mother's terminal cancer took a sudden turn. Her mother passed away April 1st, 2025. She is back now, chasing a third championship that would place her among the most decorated women in Challenge history. This one means something different.

Tori Deal
Challenge veteran · Ride or Dies winner

Tori sat out Season 41 by choice, saying back-to-back seasons had taken a mental toll. She is rested, she is focused, and she knows this format better than most people on this cast.

Brad Fiorenza
OG veteran · Won the original Cutthroat

Brad's only Challenge championship came from Season 20 — the original Cutthroat in 2010. The format is back. Brad is back. Whether lightning strikes twice for an OG who has been away from the game for years is the question nobody has answered yet.

Adrienne Naylor
Season 41 — finished 4th

Survived four eliminations on Season 41 without losing once — then bowed out in the middle of the final. Coming back with unfinished business and a point to prove.

Chris Underwood
Survivor: Edge of Extinction winner · Challenge USA 2 winner

Won Survivor. Won Challenge USA 2. Arrives in Thailand with an undefeated streak and the target that comes with it. The man has never lost a reality competition. Season 42 will test whether that record holds on the biggest stage yet.

Cedric Hodges
Big Brother alum · Season 41 bronze

Had a breakout rookie season on Season 41 — avoided almost every elimination and finished third. Comes in this time expecting nothing less than a championship. The jump from bronze to gold is where most people get humbled. We will see.

Nurys Mateo
Are You the One? alum · Battle for a New Champion runner-up

Finished second on Battle for a New Champion. Back for Season 42, newly single and with her Ride or Dies bestie Nelson by her side. Her words: "now that she is single, she can focus on playing the game, not her relationship drama." The Challenge has heard that before. But Nurys has receipts.

The full cast also includes competitors from Love Island USA, MAFS UK, Too Hot to Handle, Deal or No Deal Island, The Amazing Race and Cheer. The franchise's reach now spans essentially every major reality network — which says something about where The Challenge sits in the reality TV ecosystem in 2026.

📺 What The Move to Paramount+ Actually Means

This is bigger than a network change. For 28 years, The Challenge was MTV. It launched careers, buried reputations, and defined what reality competition television looked like on cable. The show that started in 1998 as a glorified Real World vacation has become a multi-format franchise spanning international versions, spinoffs, and now — streaming.

MTV's cable ratings have been declining for years, a victim of the same cord-cutting that has hollowed out every major cable network. The Skydance merger with Paramount accelerated the timeline. Moving the flagship to Paramount+ is an admission that the cable era is over — and a bet that the show's loyal fanbase will follow it to streaming.

Observers note the production quality already looks sharper in the Season 42 trailer — more cinematic, higher budget, closer to the premium streaming aesthetic that Paramount+ established with the All Stars spinoff. Whether that translates to better television is something only August 5th can answer.

What is certain: this is the season the franchise either justifies its existence in the streaming era, or proves it was always a cable show that cannot survive without it. Bananas knows. He said so himself.

✦ Ava's Verdict

CT vs Bananas. Cara Maria's comeback. A format that punishes individualism on a show that built its entire culture around it. Filmed in Thailand. On a streamer desperate to prove the acquisition was worth it. This season has every ingredient for something genuinely great — or a spectacular implosion. Either way, August 5th cannot come fast enough. Set your Paramount+ alerts. The Challenge just entered its most consequential era. And we will be here for every second of it.
