Everything Jennifer Tilly Is Hiding in That Very Expensive Closet
She says the least on RHOBH and owns the most. $10 million a year from a show she's never appeared in, a house next door to her house for parties, and a grief nobody talks about. We opened the closet.
Every room has that one person. The one who sits quietly at the corner of the table, says very little, watches absolutely everything, drops one line so perfectly timed it lands like a grenade — and then goes back to their drink as if nothing happened. On The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 15, surrounded by women actively imploding their marriages, fighting over foreclosure threats, writing memoirs that couldn't make the bestseller list without bulk purchases, and talking about their divorces in Tuscany while standing in grapes asking if they stain — that person was Jennifer Tilly.
She did not have a storyline. She did not need one. She has The Simpsons.
While her castmates were processing their divorces loudly, publicly, and at length across fourteen episodes, Jennifer Tilly sat in rooms that cost less than her purse and said almost nothing. Not because she had nothing to say. Because she has $40 million and absolutely nothing to prove to any of you.
We have been thinking about this for weeks. What exactly is Jennifer Tilly not telling us? What is in that closet — the actual one with the $22,000 Louis Vuitton boat purse and whatever else is in there — and the metaphorical one, the one that explains why the quietest woman on RHOBH is almost certainly the most interesting?
Let's open it.
What She's Hiding: The Money
In Season 14, while her castmates were discussing their various separations and divorce disasters, Jennifer Tilly mentioned, almost in passing, in a confessional, that she received a piece of The Simpsons in her 1991 divorce settlement from Sam Simon.
The room did not fully process this. We are not sure Jennifer Tilly fully processed this. She said it the way you might mention you have a good parking spot — casually, without ceremony, as simple background information about your life.
Let us provide the ceremony it deserved.
Sam Simon co-created The Simpsons in 1989, while he was married to Jennifer. Under California community property law, his ownership stake in the show was a marital asset. When they divorced in 1993, Jennifer was awarded a $400,000 lump sum and 30% of Sam Simon's net proceeds from The Simpsons in perpetuity.
In 1993, that was a reasonable settlement from a successful cartoon that had been on the air for four years. Nobody in that negotiating room knew it was going to run for 37 seasons and counting, renewed through Season 40, generating billions of dollars across syndication, streaming, international licensing, merchandise, and DVD rights in every country that has a screen.
Sam Simon's annual income from The Simpsons eventually reached $20-30 million per year. Jennifer's 30% cut: $6-10 million every year. Without her doing anything. Without her being in the writers' room, on the voice cast, or anywhere near Springfield. Every time Homer says "D'oh" anywhere on earth — which is happening right now, it is always happening somewhere — Jennifer Tilly receives a percentage.
When the RHOBH revelation went viral and people began calculating what this actually meant, Jennifer told E! News: "I'm astonished. Number one, I don't think of myself as rich. But I guess I'm delusional because I do have several properties and a purse apparently that cost $33,000."
She immediately corrected the purse price. It was $22,000. She called her purse contact.
"I thought everybody knew that I had a piece of The Simpsons," she added. "It's not a large piece, but even a little piece is something to write home about."
$6-10 million a year is something to write home about, Jennifer. We would like to confirm that on your behalf.
What She's Hiding: The House Next Door to the House
Jennifer Tilly owns a house in Beverly Hills. She also owns the house next door to that house. The second house is not a guest house. It is not an investment property. It is not rented out. It is a full separate house that she owns exclusively for the purpose of entertaining.
She does not live in it. She goes there to have people over.
Most of us do not own one house in Beverly Hills. Jennifer Tilly owns one for living in and one for parties. She described her actual living situation as "a very small cluttered house" where she and her boyfriend Phil Laak live simply. The entertaining house is next door. The simple cluttered house is where she actually is.
This is the most Jennifer Tilly sentence we have ever written: she owns a separate party house and considers herself to be living simply.
She also told E! News, apparently without irony: "I don't have a giant mansion or a chauffeur that calls me Miss Tilly and makes out with me like Sutton's chauffeur."
We have several questions about Sutton's chauffeur that are now more pressing than anything else in this article. But we are staying focused. The point is: Jennifer Tilly has a party house and considers this unremarkable. That is what $6-10 million a year from The Simpsons does to your relationship with the concept of normal.
What She's Hiding: The Show She Actually Runs
Here is what Jennifer Tilly does on RHOBH. She arrives. She sits. She listens. She watches. She says almost nothing for long stretches of time. And then — at exactly the right moment, when the conversation has reached its most absurd or most dramatic peak — she delivers one line.
One line. Perfectly calibrated. Dropped without warning. And then she goes back to whatever she was doing.
That is the Jennifer Tilly method. She does not explain herself. She does not build to the punchline. She does not set it up or call attention to it afterward. She says the thing and moves on, leaving the audience to catch up.
The women around her — actively crying, actively fighting, actively talking about their divorces in every country they visit — produce hours of content per episode. Jennifer Tilly produces one sentence that people are still quoting three months later.
She also plays poker professionally. She won the World Series of Poker Ladies Championship in 2005 — the first celebrity to ever win a WSOP bracelet. She reads rooms for a living, at tables where reading a room wrong costs real money. When Jennifer Tilly decides you have overstepped, you have very clearly overstepped. She called out Sutton for "snapping" at her this season. Sutton knows this now.
What She's Hiding: The Relationship Nobody Talks About
Sam Simon died in 2015. He was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2012, given three to six months to live, and survived for three more years. During those final years, Jennifer Tilly was his caregiver.
They had been divorced for over twenty years by then. They had been best friends for all of it.
"We were very close after we got divorced," she said on the RHOBH aftershow. "He was probably my best friend for 30 years. It seemed weird, but once I wasn't saddled with being a wife and all the expectations that came along with being a wife, then it seemed like it liberated us to be really close. Because we were there because we wanted to be there."
She sat with him through three years of cancer treatment. She was there when he died. And she said something quietly devastating about those last years: "In the last years of his life I was taking care of him, then he said he loved me all the time. It was really nice. I'm sure he must've said it when we were married, but I don't remember it."
He said it when she was his caregiver. Not when she was his wife.
Sam Simon spent his final years donating hundreds of millions of dollars to animal charities — giving away most of the fortune that was also, simultaneously, sending Jennifer Tilly $6-10 million a year. He was described by people who knew him as generous to a fault, difficult on set, brilliant, and complicated. The Simpsons would not have been The Simpsons without him. He left after Season 4 due to creative tensions and never went back. He spent the rest of his life giving the money away.
Jennifer Tilly sat with him while he died. Every day she says thank you to him. The money keeps coming. The Simpsons keeps running. Sam Simon is gone and his fingerprints are on everything.
This is the thing Jennifer Tilly is actually hiding in the expensive closet. Not the money. Not the purse. Not the party house. The grief of losing the person who became her best friend only after she stopped being his wife. The complicated tenderness of a relationship that made more sense in friendship than it ever did in marriage. The specific kind of loss that doesn't have a clean category because he was her ex-husband and her closest person and she watched him go.
She mentions it once per season, briefly, and then moves on. Because that is how Jennifer Tilly handles things. She says the true thing and then goes back to her drink.
What She's Hiding: Why She Doesn't Have a Diamond
The biggest mystery of RHOBH Season 15 — bigger than Kyle's paperwork situation, bigger than whatever Rodger said to Rachel from Aspen, bigger than whether Dorit's book actually sold — is why Jennifer Tilly is a "Friend Of" and not a full Housewife with a diamond.
She is funnier than most of the cast. She is richer than most of the cast. She has more interesting stories than most of the cast — an Oscar nomination, a horror franchise, a World Series of Poker bracelet, a divorce settlement that is actively funding her lifestyle thirty-three years later, and a relationship with her late ex-husband that is one of the more genuinely moving things anyone on this show has ever discussed.
She also clearly does not want the diamond. And that — that specific choice to remain adjacent rather than central, to observe rather than perform, to show up and deliver one perfect line and leave — is itself the most interesting thing about her.
Every woman on RHOBH is performing. Jennifer Tilly is not. She is simply there, in a room that costs less than her purse, watching the performance and occasionally commenting on it with the detached amusement of someone who stopped needing to prove anything approximately thirty years ago when The Simpsons became a cultural institution and she realized she was going to be fine.
More than fine. She owns a party house.
She does not think of herself as rich. She is delusional, as she herself admitted. But it is the most charming kind of delusional — the kind that comes from living inside a life so comfortable for so long that the parameters of normal have simply recalibrated around you, and you genuinely cannot remember what it felt like to worry about anything, including whether a Louis Vuitton purse was $22,000 or $33,000.
She has a purse contact for exactly this reason. The purse contact knows. This is fine. Everything is fine. The Simpsons is renewed through Season 40.
The quietest woman on RHOBH is the one with the most to say and the least need to say it. $40 million. $6-10 million a year from a show she never appeared on. A house next door to her house for parties. A World Series of Poker bracelet. A $22,000 purse she corrected because $33,000 was inaccurate and she has standards. A purse contact. A dead ex-husband she called her best friend. A grief she mentions once per season and then puts away neatly, like everything else in that very expensive closet. Jennifer Tilly is hiding nothing. She is simply not volunteering anything either. And in a room full of women competing to be the most relatable, the most dramatic, the most evolved, the most wronged — she is the only one who has already won. She won in 1993. Homer Simpson has been paying for it ever since. She says thank you every day to a man who is gone. The cartoon keeps running. The closet stays closed. We will be watching Season 16 hoping she opens it a little more. She won't. That's why we'll keep watching.
