10 Behind-the-Scenes Facts About The Challenge That Will Break Your Brain

Ruptured spleens, re-filmed eliminations, rigged finales, and the reunion from hell. The facts production never wanted you to know.

You think you know The Challenge. You've watched every season, you've mourned every Diem moment, you've screamed at your TV when TJ looked disappointed. And yet. There is a whole parallel universe of things that happened on this show that never made it to air — or that made it to air in a form so edited-down it might as well be fiction. Buckle up.

✦ ✦ ✦

01. The Backpack Lasted 40 Minutes. They Showed You 19 Seconds.

Let's set the scene. Cutthroat, 2010. Bananas and Tyler Duckworth are headed into the Gulag elimination — back-to-back, strapped together, each trying to drag the other to their barrel. Bananas had actually practiced for this. He'd tied two backpacks together to simulate the challenge. He had a strategy. He felt ready.

Then production dropped the twist: CT Tamburello — who was not even on that season, brought back as a mercenary paired with OG Tina Barta — showed up instead. Bananas had prepared for Tyler. He got CT. Six feet of pure chaos who hadn't been on a season in years and arrived with something to prove.

Bananas attempted his barrel roll strategy. CT simply stood up. With Bananas on his back. And walked to the barrel. What you saw on screen lasted 19 seconds. The full elimination — including CT's round against Tyler Duckworth, who actually held on considerably longer — lasted approximately 40 minutes. Production condensed it all into a 20-second package and accidentally created the single most replayed moment in Challenge history. Possibly in all of reality television.

Johnny Bananas — seven-time champion, self-declared greatest to ever play the game, a man who has built an entire personality out of winning — spent 19 seconds as a human backpack. And no matter how many finals he wins, no matter how many confessionals he delivers with that signature smug grin, the backpack is eternal. The internet made sure of that.

There is a lesson in humility buried somewhere in those 19 seconds. Humility, however, has never been Johnny Devenanzio's strongest suit. Or second strongest. Or honestly, a suit he owns at all.

✦ Ava's Take

CT wasn't even on that season. He came back as a mercenary, picked Bananas up like a piece of carry-on luggage, and left. Somewhere in a production vault there is a full 40-minute cut of this moment. Release it, MTV. We deserve this.

02. Kenny and Bananas Confirmed the Prize Money Splits. Just Not for Rivals.

The long-running rumor that Kenny Santucci threw the Rivals final on purpose because he and Bananas had a standing arrangement to split prize money regardless of who won? They've talked about it openly. They've confirmed splitting on certain seasons. What they've been equally clear about is that Rivals was specifically not one of those arrangements. The distinction matters — but it didn't stop the rumor from living rent-free in the Challenge community for years.

✦ Ava's Take

They confirmed the split arrangements so casually that it raises the obvious question: how many other seasons? We may never know. And somehow that's the most on-brand thing about this entire friendship.

✦ ✦ ✦

03. The Rivals 2 Live Reunion Was So Chaotic MTV Never Did One Again.

The Rivals 2 live reunion is widely considered the most dysfunctional hour in Challenge television history. CT spent the entire segment verbally sparring with host Johnny Mosley to the point where Mosley visibly didn't know what to do with himself. The cast was broadly uncooperative, everyone was talking over everyone, and no one was answering questions. The cherry on top: Knight slapped Frank right in the face on live television, was wrestled off the stage by producers, and the whole thing cut to commercial. MTV never aired a live reunion again after that night.

✦ Ava's Take

You do not reduce an Olympic gold medalist to stunned silence on live TV and then act surprised when no one gets invited back. The Rivals 2 reunion is what happens when you put uncooperative people in a live format and assume professionalism will kick in. It did not kick in.

04. Tony Raines Almost Died. On His Very First Season.

On Battle of the Bloodlines — Tony's debut — he fell during a heights-over-water challenge called "Meet Me Halfway." He thought it was a back injury. Doctors found nothing at his first hospital visit. He was cleared and continued filming. Then he collapsed while the cast was heading to an elimination. Rushed back to the hospital, it was discovered he had ruptured his spleen and was experiencing massive internal bleeding. By that point, he had already lost four pints of blood. One more day without surgery and he would not have survived. He was removed from the competition along with his bloodline, his brother Shane.

✦ Ava's Take

Tony almost died. On his first season. After production cleared him following a first hospital visit that found nothing. This is what "the show must go on" looks like when it goes very, very wrong. Four pints of blood. One more day. We don't talk about this enough.

✦ ✦ ✦

05. Jordan Wiseley Won Dirty 30 on a Fractured Leg. One Against Two Champions.

The Dirty 30 final opened with a skydive. Jordan's parachute failed to deploy properly and he crash-landed hard — so hard that the licensed instructor jumping tandem with him broke his arm on impact. Jordan sustained a hairline fracture in his tibia. He said nothing to production. He then ran the entire final — against CT Tamburello and three-time champion Derrick Kosinski — and won. With a broken leg. He took home $450,000.

✦ Ava's Take

The professional instructor broke his arm. Jordan broke his leg. Jordan said nothing and won the whole thing. Jordan Wiseley is simply built different. Full stop.

✦ ✦ ✦

06. Kyle, Theo, and Bananas Taped Amanda Garcia's Mouth Shut. Against Her Will.

Footage that never made it to air shows Kyle Christie, Theo Campbell, and Johnny Bananas using tape to physically cover Amanda Garcia's mouth following an argument — without her consent. The incident was described as "very disturbing" by both Paulie Calafiore and Da'Vonne Rogers. It did not air.

✦ Ava's Take

The fact that this is described as "unseen footage" and not something else entirely is its own sentence. Make of that what you will.

✦ ✦ ✦

07. The Final Reckoning Elimination Was Filmed Twice. The First Take Almost Went the Other Way.

The elimination between Johnny Bananas & Tony Raines and Paulie Calafiore & Natalie Negrotti was stopped mid-way through — apparently due to a malfunction — with Bananas and Tony reportedly nearly winning. The elimination was redone the following day. This time Paulie and Natalie won. The version that aired is the second one. What happened in the first take stays in whatever production vault holds these things.

✦ Ava's Take

So the outcome of an elimination that sent two people home may have been entirely different had a piece of equipment not malfunctioned. And we just moved on. As one does on this show.

✦ ✦ ✦

08. War of the Worlds 2: The UK Team Waited 20–30 Minutes at the Final Puzzle.

During the War of the Worlds 2 final, the UK team reached the last puzzle and was instructed to wait for the US team — for somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes. The edit made it look like a photo finish. It was not. Cast members talked about it openly after the season aired.

✦ Ava's Take

Twenty to thirty minutes is not a photo finish. That is a lunch break. The UK team sat there and waited while production manufactured drama that did not exist. Respect the receipts.

09. Multiple Women Have Competed Pregnant. One Made It to the Final.

At least five women have competed on The Challenge while pregnant — and the number has only grown. The confirmed cases:

Melissa Reeves (Total Madness, 2020) — the most jaw-dropping of all. She made it all the way to the final before either she or production realized she was pregnant. She quit during the finale after scaling a snowy mountain in Austria and putting two and two together. Her daughter Vienna was named after the filming location.

Natalie Anderson (Double Agents, 2020) — suddenly exited the season and confirmed afterward that she had found out she was pregnant while filming.

Bettina Buchanan (Spies, Lies & Allies, 2021) — found out she was 15 weeks pregnant only after she got home following her elimination. She had noticed she was getting weaker and slower with each passing week but had no idea why.

Olivia Kaiser (Vets & New Threats, 2024) — ran the entire two-day final in the Andes Mountains at seven weeks pregnant without knowing. She conceived during the first week of filming. Her boyfriend Theo Campbell competed in the same season and final. They welcomed their son Atlas shortly after.

A fifth case from Battle of the Sexes (2002) has been referenced but the cast member has never been publicly identified by name.

✦ Ava's Take

Olivia Kaiser ran a two-day final in the Andes at seven weeks pregnant and won. With her baby's father watching from the same cast. This show, I swear.

✦ ✦ ✦

10. Drink Tickets. They Gave Them Drink Tickets.

By Season 37 (Spies, Lies & Allies), production had introduced a drink ticket system to control alcohol consumption in the house. Cory Wharton described the experience as "like kids at a carnival" — once your tickets were gone, that was it. No more drinks. A system that would have prevented approximately 40% of the show's most memorable moments, had it existed from day one.

✦ Ava's Take

Cory Wharton — a man who has competed in some of the most physically brutal challenges on television — was undone by a drink ticket system. The Challenge giveth and the Challenge taketh away.

"The show you think you're watching is about a third of what actually happened. The rest is NDAs, re-filmed eliminations, and a whole lot of things production hopes you never find out."
