MAFS Australia 2025: Half the Cast Had Already Been on TV Before — DDW

They Said "I Do" to a Stranger. They'd Already Said It to a Camera Crew.

Four actors. Three reality TV veterans. One Miss Yacht International. One woman spotted in the Deal or No Deal audience. Season 12 of MAFS Australia had at least eleven cast members with prior TV appearances — and Channel 9 acted surprised by the drama.

Every year, Channel 9 rolls out the same pitch: ordinary Australians, unlucky in love, brave enough to marry a stranger. And every year, without fail, we find out the cast is about as ordinary as a Kardashian at a farmers market. But Season 12 of Married at First Sight Australia took things to an entirely new level. Because it turns out that at least eleven of the season's brides and grooms had already appeared on television before walking down the aisle. Four of them have legitimate acting credits. One was actively filming a Hollywood movie while the show was airing. And one was spotted in the audience of Deal or No Deal. Ladies and gentlemen, your 2025 "unlucky in love" singles.

Part One: The Actual Actors

Ryan Donnelly & Jacqui Burfoot

Ryan Donnelly and Jacqui Burfoot on MAFS Australia 2025

Ryan Donnelly & Jacqui Burfoot — Season 12

Let's start with the most audacious case in recent MAFS history. Ryan Donnelly was introduced to viewers as a project manager. Which is technically true, if you consider that his main project has always been managing his acting career — quietly, strategically, and apparently behind everyone's backs.

Before MAFS, Ryan had profiles on casting sites StarNow and Right Fit — both of which he quietly deleted before the show started airing. Those profiles listed credits in Neighbours, NCIS: Sydney, and Aussie dating show Beauty and the Geek. He also appeared in The Last Anniversary, the BINGE original produced by Nicole Kidman, playing a police officer guarding a star patient. A small role, sure. But one he was delighted to discuss. "It's always amazing fun on sets like those," he told Yahoo Lifestyle — while the show was actively airing.

And then, while Australia was watching him fumble his relationship with Jacqui in real time, the Daily Mail photographed him on the streets of Sydney filming a Hollywood horror movie alongside Dylan O'Brien and Xavier Samuel. He was in a blue suit. He looked great. He's very much still at it.

He deleted his casting profiles before the show aired. He was photographed on a Hollywood film set while it was airing. He described his marriage as "a casserole of nonsense." He's not wrong, but he's also an actor, so take that with appropriate seasoning.

His "marriage" to New Zealander Jacqui Burfoot was, in a word, television. Jacqui demanded Ryan shave his beard. Ryan dropped Jacqui on the dance floor and begged producers to cut the footage. Jacqui called fellow cast member Clint at 3am during the experiment — while still married to Ryan on paper. They made it to Final Vows, where Jacqui declared Ryan was a "red carpet in a world of red flags," and Ryan told her a relationship shouldn't be a "performance review." Brutal. Accurate. Probably rehearsed.

After filming, things escalated rapidly. Jacqui filed a police report alleging Ryan shared private intimate content without her consent. Ryan applied for an Apprehended Violence Order, claiming she was trying to "destroy his life" with false allegations on social media. Both were granted interim restraining orders against each other. NSW police investigated production company Endemol Shine. Channel 9 gave Ryan an interview on The Today Show, which Jacqui publicly criticised them for. Jacqui, meanwhile, had moved in with Clint Rice and got engaged to him.

A casserole of nonsense, indeed.

Veronica Cloherty & Eliot Donovan (intruders)

Veronica Cloherty and Eliot Donovan on MAFS Australia 2025

Veronica Cloherty & Eliot Donovan — Season 12

Veronica Cloherty is a personal trainer, actress, and two-time Miss Universe Australia finalist — 2016 and 2019 — who studied the Meisner technique and cites Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as her inspirations. Her film Streets of Colour received an AACTA nomination for Best Indie Feature Film in 2024. She has credits in short films While We Live and Fuse, the web series RIFK, a theatre production called The Stoned Wolf, and — this is real — a music video for Stephen Sanchez's Baby Blue Bathing Suit, a tie-in song for a Disney documentary about the Beach Boys, in which she plays his love interest running down a beach with a surfboard.

She is, in short, a working actress who ended up on MAFS. And she treated it like exactly that — another credit on her CV. Production insiders told the Daily Mail she had "failed to make an impression in auditions elsewhere" and viewed the experiment as her next shot at visibility. She was labelled a "high maintenance diva" on set. Cast members accused her of treating every scene as an audition. She accumulated more Instagram followers in three months than most people get in a lifetime. Objective achieved.

Her husband, Eliot Donovan, had already spectacularly abandoned his first marriage to Lauren — packing his bags less than 48 hours into their honeymoon — before being handed a second chance and matched with Veronica. Their pairing started promisingly. Then Veronica went behind Eliot's back to ask his ex-wife Lauren about him, it came out at a dinner party, and everything collapsed.

Their exit came at the sixth Commitment Ceremony. Veronica's parting words: "He was just a bit stiff, and he didn't really give me anything. It was like drawing blood from a stone with Eliot." Zero survivors.

Jeff Gobbels & Rhi Disljenkovic

Jeff Gobbels & Rhi Disljenkovic — Season 12

Jeff appeared in three episodes of Neighbours in 2017, playing police officer Kurt Bridges — which makes him the second Neighbours alumnus in this cast, since Ryan also has Neighbours credits, which says something about the pipeline between that soap and this show. He also has credits in The Warriors, The Whistleblower, Undertow, and A Promise Carved in Flesh. He kept this relatively quiet. Given the circumstances, who can blame him.

Jeff's MAFS journey began with one of the season's most jaw-dropping altar moments: he and his assigned bride Rhi recognized each other. They had previously dated. Their connection had fizzled out before becoming anything serious. The experts had no idea. The internet immediately accused the whole thing of being staged.

It wasn't — or if it was, both parties committed to it with impressive consistency for nearly a year. Their story was, by Season 12 standards, refreshingly wholesome: slow-burn, friend-zone first, genuine warmth at Final Vows. Jeff gave Rhi a key to his home during Homestay Week. They moved into a Melbourne apartment together. They were the last surviving original couple from the season.

That is, until June 2026, when they unfollowed each other on Instagram and released separate statements confirming their split — making Season 12's final couple success rate a mathematically perfect zero percent. Neighbours should have stuck to the script.

Carina Mirabile & Paul Antoine

Carina Mirabile and Paul Antoine on MAFS Australia 2025

Carina Mirabile & Paul Antoine — Season 12

Carina Mirabile has a degree in broadcast journalism. She has interned at TV channels. She auditioned to host E! News Australia in 2014. Her personal website describes her as "just a girl from Western Australia with ambition and dreams to excel in the entertainment world." Her television portfolio before MAFS includes: The X Factor (2012, her sister was a contestant); Dash Dolls (the short-lived Kardashian spin-off, as an extra); MTV's Love & Hip Hop; renovation show New Homes Guide (featuring her family's hardware store); the miniseries The Claremont Murders; and a music video for Sidhu Bhammeala's 2021 track Boss. MAFS was not a detour. It was the next logical step in a deliberate career trajectory.

Her MAFS journey opened with the season's most gasping altar moment: she and her assigned groom Paul Antoine recognized each other. They had gone on a date before the experiment. Paul had ghosted her. She forgave him — graciously, publicly, on camera — and they became one of the season's strongest couples.

Then came the wall.

After a day out with couple friends Rhi and Jeff, Carina casually mentioned in an Uber that she'd once slept with the rapper whose song happened to be playing on the radio. (The rapper, per reports circulating online, was Quavo.) Paul, deeply upset, returned to their apartment alone and punched a hole in the wall.

He told the group himself at the next dinner party. He cried. He said he was "disgusted" by his own actions. The experts were not gentle: John Aiken asked Paul directly why the three of them shouldn't remove him from the experiment immediately. Paul stayed, subject to strict conditions set by production. A police investigation was subsequently launched. A safety watchdog opened an inquiry. Production footage was reportedly seized.

Carina said his reaction proved he had strong feelings for her. She cited their "passionate European" temperaments. They voted to stay. They did not end up together.

Part Two: The Reality TV Veterans

Paul Antoine & The Real Love Boat

Before ghosting Carina, punching walls, and becoming the subject of a police investigation, Paul Antoine — originally from Nice, now based in Perth — sailed the Regal Princess in 2022 as a contestant on The Real Love Boat Australia. He was there to find his "perfect partner." He formed a connection with a passenger named Courtney Justin. Their romance ended before the show even made it to air.

He then applied for MAFS, was matched with the woman he'd previously ghosted, briefly became Australia's favourite couple, and then became Australia's most controversial groom. The universe has a very specific sense of humour.

Sierah Swepstone & Billy Belcher

Sierah Swepstone & Billy Belcher — Season 12

In 2021, Sierah Swepstone tried her luck on The Bachelor Australia, competing for Jimmy Nicholson's heart across eight episodes. She was eliminated in episode eight. Her exit interview became instant Australian television legend: she said she didn't think Jimmy was into "tall, horny bogans," wished him well, and left.

When later asked if she'd do reality TV again, she said: "If I have another chance to do a reality TV experience I know it will be a much better experience because I'll be able to relax and enjoy myself." She did. She married Billy Belcher on MAFS 2025. They were, by all accounts, one of the season's more low-drama pairings — which, after everything else this year, felt medically necessary.

Teejay Halkias & Beth Kelly (intruders)

Teejay Halkias and Beth Kelly on MAFS Australia 2025

Teejay Halkias & Beth Kelly — Season 12

Before MAFS, Teejay appeared on Season 15 of Big Brother Australia in 2023, lasting 15 days before being evicted in ninth place. He had a brief romance with a housemate that ended as soon as filming wrapped. He also appeared in a Wahl Australia advertisement for JB-HI-FI, and had an active StarNow profile — which the MAFS fandom duly unearthed within approximately 48 hours of his introduction.

His MAFS journey followed a suspiciously familiar arc. He and British bride Beth Kelly started strong — a refreshingly normal wedding, genuine chemistry, real early optimism. Then Teejay began citing "connection issues." Expert Alessandra Rampolla clapped back in real time: "There is a problem with connection because you're not wanting to connect with her." At the final Commitment Ceremony, Teejay voted to leave while Beth voted to stay.

Before Final Vows, Beth told him she wasn't willing to dress up and pour her heart out just to be rejected again. They left separately. An insider later claimed the couple had been nudged to exit early by production to cut costs. Just to add the final layer of insult to an already insulting situation.

Part Three: The Supporting Cast of Ambition

Tim Gromie — The Professional Applicant

Tim Gromie on MAFS Australia 2025

Tim Gromie — Season 12

Tim deserves his own special subcategory: the man who wanted MAFS so badly he spent three years trying to get on it, then squandered the opportunity within the first few episodes. A casting producer claimed he had applied multiple times over three years before being selected. He had reportedly also auditioned for The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, and was caught boasting to co-stars that he had "almost been cast" in those shows. Producers, per reports, were baffled by his behaviour during the experiment given how persistently he'd pursued the opportunity. Three years of applications. Gone in record time.

Jacqui Burfoot — Miss Yacht International

Jacqui introduced herself to Australia as "Miss New Zealand." She mentioned it in her introduction tape. She worked it into conversations with the regularity of someone who had paid for the credential and intended to get full value from it. It was not true. She had represented New Zealand in a competition called Miss Yacht International, which has no affiliation with Miss Universe, Miss World, or any recognised international pageant organisation. This is, in the grand scheme of Season 12 revelations, a relatively minor offence. But in a season this saturated with embellishment, it felt perfectly on brand.

Morena Farina — The Deal or No Deal Cameo

Morena Farina on MAFS Australia 2025

Morena Farina — Season 12

Morena Farina was one of the season's more combustible personalities, paired with Tony Mojanovski in a relationship that lurched between genuine highs and a dramatic mid-season exit. She claimed, on a podcast, that producers had "held her against her will" during filming. She has since become a Bully Zero ambassador and returned to her career as a DJ.

Before all of that, eagle-eyed MAFS Reddit users spotted her in the audience of a Deal or No Deal episode, seated directly behind briefcase number 16, accompanied by her son. We are counting it.

Jamie Marinos — The Exception That Proves the Rule

Jamie Marinos on MAFS Australia 2025

Jamie Marinos — Season 12

In the interest of full disclosure: Jamie Marinos also appeared on television before MAFS. Roughly eight or nine years ago, she was briefly interviewed on Nine News after a robbery at the store she managed. We are giving her the benefit of the doubt. Getting caught in a news segment after a workplace incident is categorically different from auditioning for three reality shows over three years, deleting your casting profiles, and filming a Hollywood movie during broadcast. Jamie was probably the only person in Season 12 who was genuinely there to find love — and it showed. She and Dave Hand left Final Vows together, which made them the only couple to do so under circumstances that didn't later require legal intervention.

Part Four: So Is It Actually Fake?

Here is the thing about Season 12 that goes beyond the casting. Because even if you accept that actors and reality TV veterans might still be capable of genuine emotion — which, credit where due, some of them clearly are — the production itself has some explaining to do.

A leaked TikTok showed cast members Awhina and Adrian being asked to walk through their apartment door "one more time" because their walk "wasn't convincing enough." The camera crew filmed them entering and re-entering the building over and over from multiple angles. The caption: "If walking through a door needs this many takes, how many you reckon the big drama has?"

Eight cast members had already been on television before the experiment began. Production filmed people walking through a door until it looked natural. The only couple who left together have since split. The experts looked shocked every week. The audience watched every episode. This is the deal we've all agreed to.

The season accumulated editing errors at a rate that suggested either extreme carelessness or a production timeline that left no time for review: beards that appeared and vanished mid-episode, drinks that cycled from full to empty and back, Jacqui making the same dinner party entrance twice. Cast members accused production of assigning them specific "narratives" and pressuring them to stay when they wanted to leave. Morena claimed she was "held against her will." Ryan's friends documented what they described as his daily mental health deterioration and said producers actively discouraged him from leaving.

The show itself acknowledges, when pressed, that applicants need to be "financially stable" before joining — because the pay is nowhere near a livable wage. The real currency is what comes after: the followers, the Cameo page, the brand deals, the talent agency signing. Everyone in that apartment understood the math. Some of them had run those calculations on previous shows.

So here is the question Season 12 ultimately forces: if the cast includes working actors, the production engineers the drama, the editing shapes the narrative, and the only couple to leave hand-in-hand has since confirmed their split — at what point does "reality TV" just become TV?

The experts continue to look shocked every season. The audience continues to watch every episode. And somewhere in Sydney, Ryan Donnelly is probably on a film set right now, blue suit, chatting with the crew, very much still at it.

✦ Ava's Verdict

Season 12 of MAFS Australia was the most transparently ambitious cast in the show's history — a lineup that included four people with acting credits, three reality TV veterans, a woman who had auditioned for E! News Australia, and one audience member from Deal or No Deal. They were given a platform with twelve million viewers, a wall to punch, a restraining order to file, and a reunion special to attend. Most of them came in with a plan. Very few of them stuck to it. None of them ended up together. Channel 9 will do it all again next year, with a fresh cast and the same knowing pitch: ordinary Australians, unlucky in love. We will watch. We always watch.
