They Weren't Supposed to Be There. They Changed the Whole Season Anyway.
A husband. A million-dollar betrayal. A drink in the face. A disqualification. And one reigning champion sitting in Iceland watching it all from the bench. The Challenge replacements who changed the game — and the one who never got the call.
Casting on The Challenge works a lot like air travel. Having a ticket does not mean you are getting on the plane.
Over the years, players have flown to location, quarantined for weeks, packed enough athletic wear for three months and a small gym — and then gone home without appearing on camera for a single second.
Those are the sad stories.
We are here for the other ones. The people who were never supposed to be there at all.
Because a replacement is not always someone production tosses in to fill an empty bed. Some last-minute casting changes have created finalists and champions, launched marriages, started wars, gotten people disqualified — and in one particularly wild case, may have helped set the stage for the most infamous million-dollar decision in Challenge history.
Let's start at the beginning.
THE RUINS — Susie Got the Call. Then the Money. Then the Husband.
Susie Meister was not originally supposed to compete on The Ruins.
Cara Zavaleta was expected to be part of the Champions team. She dropped out before filming. Susie got the spot.
Susie did not waste it.
She made it all the way to the end and won the season with the Champions. And while she was busy winning, she also met Adam Butler, who was working behind the scenes on the show. The two eventually married.
So the full Susie timeline goes like this:
Cara drops out. Susie gets the call. Susie wins. Susie meets her future husband.
Most alternates get a plane ticket home. Susie got prize money and a husband.
Not a bad shift for a substitute.
FRESH MEAT II — Nobody Picked Luke. Then a Passport Picked Evelyn.
Picture being Luke Wolfe at the Fresh Meat II draft.
Everyone is getting picked. Everyone. And you are the last Fresh Meat guy standing there without a partner, smiling like it doesn't hurt.
Then production tells you who your partner is.
Evelyn Smith.
Things could be worse, Luke.
Jonna Mannion had been expected to compete but reportedly couldn't get into Canada because of a passport issue. Evelyn was brought in after the draft and automatically paired with the one guy nobody wanted.
And this was not some random warm body. Evelyn was already a two-time champion and one of the strongest women the show had ever seen. Luke went from the guy nobody picked to the guy partnered with Evelyn freaking Smith.
They didn't win, but they survived two Exiles before finally falling to Landon and Carley — the team that went on to win the whole season.
One passport. Entire game changed.
RIVALS II — Cara Maria Wasn't Cooke's Partner. Until She Was Standing Next to Her in the Final.
It's hard to remember Rivals II without Cara Maria and Cooke.
But that was not the original team. Cooke entered the season with Naomi Defensor, and Naomi had to leave because of a family emergency.
Cooke suddenly needed a partner. Enter Cara Maria.
Instead of keeping Cooke alive for an episode or two, the replacement pairing turned into one of the strongest women's teams of the season. They went all the way to the final and finished second behind Paula and Emily.
Cara Maria was not part of Cooke's path through the game at all.
She ended up at the finish line with her.
That's not filling an empty spot. That's changing the season.
FINAL RECKONING — The Casting Domino That Ended at a Million-Dollar Betrayal.
This one needs a little explaining, because part of it comes from reported casting information rather than anything MTV officially laid out for viewers.
Devin Walker was supposed to be Johnny Bananas' partner on Final Reckoning. Shortly before filming, Devin's father died. Devin understandably left, and Bananas was suddenly without his intended partner.
Tony Raines was brought in instead.
Which, frankly, was perfect Challenge casting. Tony had betrayed Bananas on Vendettas. Production basically looked at the unfinished business between those two and said: yes, put them on a team.
But according to reported casting information, Tony had originally declined the main cast, and there were plans for Tony and Madison Channing Walls to show up later as Mercenaries.
Once Tony was moved into the game with Bananas, that plan changed.
And the Mercenary team that eventually walked in?
Ashley Mitchell and Hunter Barfield.
They didn't make a cameo. They entered the game, made the final, and won the season.
Then Ashley was handed the choice: split the $1 million with Hunter, or keep it all.
She kept it.
Somewhere down the road, Hunter is standing at a final wondering where his half-million dollars went. And it might all trace back to one casting change nobody at home ever saw.
— Ava WittWe can't say with certainty that Devin's departure directly caused Ashley and Hunter to enter the game. Challenge casting plans change behind the scenes constantly.
But look at the chain:
Tony becomes Bananas' partner
The reported Tony/Madison Mercenary plan changes
Ashley and Hunter enter as Mercenaries
Ashley and Hunter win
Ashley keeps the entire $1 million
Hunter: $0
That is one hell of a Challenge "what if."
DOUBLE AGENTS — Kam Eliminated Ashley. Apparently It Didn't Count.
Speaking of Ashley Mitchell. Being eliminated is not always enough to get you off The Challenge.
On Double Agents, Kam beat Ashley in the very first elimination of the season. Ashley went home. Case closed.
Except it wasn't.
The season started bleeding female competitors, production needed another woman, and they brought Ashley back. Yes. The woman who had already been eliminated.
Ashley returned, partnered with Cory, and eventually landed in elimination again.
Against Kam.
And Kam sent her home.
Again.
Kam had to eliminate Ashley Mitchell twice in the same season. Only on The Challenge can you beat someone, send them packing, and then find out your first attempt was more of a suggestion.
DOUBLE AGENTS, PART TWO — Meanwhile, Jenny West Was Sitting Right There.
And this is where Double Agents gets genuinely strange.
Jenny West had just won Total Madness. Not "won the women's side." She crossed the finish line ahead of everyone, men included.
Then she flew to Iceland for Double Agents.
As an alternate.
She never entered the game.
Let's sit with that for a second. Production needed another woman so badly that they resurrected Ashley Mitchell after she'd already been eliminated. And the reigning Total Madness champion was on the bench.
They brought back an eliminated player. The reigning champion was right there. Iceland is cold, but that decision was colder.
— Ava WittSo here's the "what if." Jenny enters Double Agents. Does she make the final? And if Jenny West is standing at that starting line, does CT and Amber's win play out the same way?
We'll never know.
But leaving one of the strongest women in Challenge history on the sidelines while recycling an eliminated player remains one of the most fascinating casting calls this show has ever made.
SPIES, LIES & ALLIES — The Champ Walked In. Fessy Wanted Her Out. Fessy Got Out Instead.
One season later, production had another reigning female champion available. This time, they actually used her.
Amber Borzotra had just won Double Agents with CT, yet she wasn't in the original Spies, Lies & Allies cast. She entered after Lauren Coogan left and automatically became Josh Martinez's new partner.
You'd think the vets would be thrilled to see the defending champion walk through the door.
Fessy Shafaat had other plans.
Despite Amber's ties to the Big Brother crew, Fessy was already eyeing her for elimination almost as soon as she unpacked. Josh tried to talk him down. Then Fessy and Esther won the Agency.
Fessy pulled the trigger. He blindsided Amber and sent her into elimination with Hughie against Corey L. and Michele.
Amber won.
And she came back pissed.
What followed was one of the messiest stretches of the season. Amber confronted Fessy. Josh defended Amber. Esther got involved and threw a drink in Amber's face. And the growing tension between Josh and Fessy finally exploded into a physical confrontation.
Fessy was removed from the game.
Time before Fessy targets her: Basically immediately
Elimination result: Amber wins
Drinks thrown: One, by Esther
Big Brother alliance status: Civil war
Player disqualified: Fessy
Amber didn't just replace someone. She walked into a complicated alliance, survived the guy who tried to get rid of her, and the fallout ended with him leaving.
That's a replacement who changed the house.
RIDE OR DIES — Two Replacements Who Started a Much Bigger Story.
Horacio Gutiérrez and Olivia Kaiser became one of the breakout teams of Ride or Dies.
They weren't supposed to be there.
Early in the season, Kaycee Clark and her brother Kenny were removed from the game after testing positive for COVID. Production brought in Horacio and Olivia as replacements.
And because this is The Challenge, the replacement story didn't stop there.
Kaycee and Kenny were eventually cleared to return. By then, Emmy had quit the game, taking her partner Nam out with her — so Kaycee and Kenny came back as replacements themselves.
Yes. The team that got replaced eventually returned to replace another team.
Try putting that on a flowchart.
Now here's the other funny part.
The season was called Ride or Dies. The whole premise was that you compete with your person. Your best friend. Your sibling. Your partner. The one you'd help bury a body.
Horacio and Olivia barely knew each other.
Olivia later admitted they'd essentially been set up through management and became actual friends while filming. So their "ride or die" bond was roughly the age of their quarantine.
Two replacements. Practically strangers. Dropped into a season built on unbreakable relationships.
Naturally, they became one of the strongest teams there.
They survived multiple eliminations and made it all the way to the final, where Olivia suffered a series of brutal injuries that forced them out. Not the ending they deserved. But not the end of the story either.
Because Horacio came back.
BATTLE FOR A NEW CHAMPION — Horacio Fell for Nurys. The Alliance Fell Apart.
On Battle for a New Champion, things started heating up between Horacio and Nurys Mateo. And unlike most Challenge showmances, this one actually survived the flight home. They became a real couple after filming.
Sweet, right?
Not for the alliance.
Nurys had come into Season 39 tight with Olivia, Jay and others. But the closer she got to Horacio — and to Horacio's buddy Kyland — the blurrier the lines got.
Eventually Nurys was standing in the middle, with her boyfriend on one side and the people she considered her closest friends in the game on the other.
That rarely ends well on The Challenge.
It didn't.
The result was one of the season's biggest friendship breakdowns, especially between Nurys and Olivia. Yes. Olivia. The same Olivia who had walked into Ride or Dies alongside Horacio as part of that replacement team.
He came into Ride or Dies with Olivia as part of a replacement team. One season later, he was dating Nurys while Nurys and Olivia found themselves on opposite sides of one of the messiest alliance breakdowns of Season 39.
That's quite a butterfly effect for a guy who wasn't even on the original Ride or Dies cast.
— Ava WittHoracio and Nurys kept the relationship going after the show and even returned together as a couple on Battle of the Eras.
They're no longer together. Nurys confirmed the breakup in early 2026, after roughly two years.
But look at what one replacement call set in motion:
Horacio and Olivia come in as replacements
Two near-strangers become finalists
Horacio returns and falls for Nurys
Nurys and Olivia's friendship implodes
Horacio and Nurys return as a couple on Battle of the Eras
Status in 2026: Broken up
Two seasons of drama, a real relationship, a broken friendship and a couples comeback. All because production needed somebody to fill a bed.
Now that's a casting butterfly effect.
THE ALTERNATES WE NEVER SEE — They Might Matter More Than the Cast List.
Most Challenge alternates vanish from history. They fly out. They quarantine. They wait. Nobody drops out. They fly home. The end.
But every once in a while, somebody gets the call.
And every once in a while, somebody doesn't.
Susie walked into The Ruins and walked out with a win and a husband. A passport problem handed Luke one of the greatest women in Challenge history. Cara Maria went from replacement to finalist. Amber walked into a Big Brother civil war and walked out still standing while Fessy didn't. Horacio and Olivia went from near-strangers to finalists, and Horacio's arrival spilled into an entirely different season's love story and friendship implosion.
And then there's Jenny West. A reigning champion who flew to Iceland and watched a season desperate for women carry on without her.
TJ always says anything can happen once the game begins. Apparently, quite a lot happens before he even blows the first horn. 🍷
